A mobilizing project A group of young people from Québec and around the world send out a call for commitment. The Great Declaration proclaims the principles and values they wish to promote on a global scale. Its aim is to instill the desire for change and to stimulate involvement among citizens. Although primarily proposed by young people, its message is addressed to all generations. Original in its content, the Great Declaration invites each signatory to personally commit to concrete action with a view to building a world that is more just, more open and more united. The Great Declaration will be officially proclaimed on August 12, 2008, on the occasion of the United Nations' International Youth Day, to be held in Quebec City within the scope of its 400th anniversary.
This text is the outcome of a collective exercise that took place between February and August 2007. A steering committee comprised of 26 young people aged 15 to 30 from various regions of Quebec was set up to draft an initial version. After a national and international consultation, several amendments were made, resulting in this final text. At INM's 2007 Summer School, which brought together 800 young people from Québec and around the world, the Great Declaration's final version was adopted after a democratic and deliberative process. It is now being ratified at the international level. The project is an initiative of the Institut du Nouveau Monde (INM) with the collaboration of Oxfam Québec, the Québec Offices jeunesse internationaux and ReGeneration 2008 - the 4th World Youth Congress. Based in Montreal, INM is a non-partisan organization dedicated to citizens' participation in democratic life.
THE INSTITUT DU NOUVEAU MONDE Founded in 2003, Institut du Nouveau Monde (INM) is an independent, non-partisan, not-for-profit organization dedicated to the renewal of ideas and the facilitating of public debates in Quebec.
